Introduction to role

The Pharmaceutical Science Student Work Placement Programme offers a unique 12-month opportunity to dive into the world of innovative drug discovery. At AstraZeneca, you will engage in meaningful work within a pioneering research and development organization. This placement will help you develop essential skills, expand your knowledge, and build a network that will set you up for future success. Accountabilities

We offer 12-month placements at AstraZeneca’s Gothenburg site in Sweden for students at Swedish institutions. Pharmaceutical Sciences is a department within AstraZeneca Biopharmaceutical R&D. The Pharmaceutical Sciences’ mission is to transform molecules into investigational medicines, meeting the unmet needs of future patients. We have three distinct project opportunities in this group.

 

Early Chemical Development:

  • Learn about analytical chemistry with a focus on chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques.
  • Develop methods for chiral and achiral separations on both analytical and preparative scales.
  • Gain exposure to spectroscopic techniques such as X-ray fluorescence, mass spectrometry, and NMR.
  • Use chemometrics tools to evaluate results.
  • Improve communication skills by presenting work to wider teams.
  • Placement students will be hosted in the Separation Science Lab in Early Chemical Development and employed by AstraZeneca’s Early Talent partner Kelly Services.

 

Advanced Drug Delivery:

  • Conduct lab-based work focusing on formulation development and analytical work.
  • Develop products for compounds beyond the rule of 5 (bRo5), such as PROTACS.
  • Build capabilities in formulation, analytical stability control, dissolution, solubility, and absorption.
  • Collaborate with experienced scientists to guide investigations.

 

Early Product Development & Manufacturing (EPDM):

  • Work in a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) environment developing an understanding of various process technologies.
  • Focus on the manufacturing of drug products using practical hands-on processes.
  • Gain insight into a range of manufacturing techniques, including continuous manufacturing.
  • Contribute to drug deliveries across AstraZeneca’s therapeutic areas.

 

Essential Skills/Experience

  • BSc or MSc or equivalent students in any Chemistry aligned course at a Swedish University.
  • You must have completed at least two years of your university education at the time of starting the placement and be returning to complete your studies after this opportunity ends.
  • Performing at a high level, with the potential to achieve a pass with distinction.
  • Applicants must have the eligibility to work in Sweden for 12 months from September 2025 without the need for additional work permits.
  • Students will be expected to take a study break from their education to participate in the programme; this will need to be arranged by the student at their institution. Please ensure that you receive approval to take a study break from your university.
